With a quick glance I did note one greengrocer's slip. There will be more no doubt :D

Account names for new wiki does not like spaces in the name

'The Hooded Thing' is not liked

The_Hooded_Thing etc would work......

What would you like?

Please forgive me for perhaps an indelicate question, but who is The Hooded Thing? Does someone know what's under the hood, as it were, outside of the forum? He joined the forum today, and his one post is, well, rather a bit brash if technically correct. When I saw the post earlier I was about ready to perma-ban for impertinence.

Definitely brash for a 1st poster :D In fact more than brash! The brashiest! I did wonder all of these things myself. However in the community spirit I didn't really know what to do ;)

Well I learned a new term :)

And I thought all the time, my insistance on having the apostrophes in the right place, was pedantic... Now is there a term for excessive use of, comma's, or elipseses...

I have a fairly simple view of the apostrophe based on first principals which works for me.

They represent one or more letters which are omitted in written language in order to reflect the flow and rythm of spoken english. One major area of use does concern plurality/possesion.

It's orange - It is orange (in colour) -or- Its orange - the orange belonging to It (whatever It is)
Kings College - the College named after [The|Mr] King -or- Kings' College - Kingses College (the College named after [more than one|a family named] King or Mr Kings)

Whenever the letter "s" appears at the end of a word (with or without an apostrophe), the context of the sentence will tell if an apostrophe is needed or not...

Pedantry doesn't need to be difficult...:D

I for one share johnsonx42's concern over ensuring there is some kind of security over "trusted" sites like the wiki, although banning someone who could be a long-time lurker would be outrageous. What is the protection over the binaries and installers that are available through the wiki?

I too was concerned about an entirely new user to this forum requesting access to the wiki. Hence why immediate authorship was not granted. (until discussion by wiki admin off forum). In the spirit of the community it would have been difficult to not have granted authorship permissions in this instance. Wiki admin agreed to do so with an eye to watch what may have happened should someone wish to sabotage entries. In this case everything I have seen done by this new author is entirely in the spirit of the community and the new wiki and should be encouraged wholeheartedly.

What 'protection' would you be looking for here over binaries and installers? Switch to PM?

Any chance I can get access please? I'd like to move the instructions/download point for nDroid out of the forum support thread here to make it easier to maintain. Thanks.

BTW - no big rush, got plenty to work on at the moment.

I have no idea how to get into it (Wiki admin or Wiki editior) or proceed in any sort of way.

I must tell you something - I have seen other forums where you get an e-mail when someone replies to a topic you are part of. This would be grand with this forum as I really don't have the time to come back and try and figure out where I left off, with which topics or even how many topics I am part of. The lack of this feature is one reason it is hard to have continuity with NPVR.

Added note later: and yet I see back in August I WAS getting e-mails when replies were made, but not now - I don't know why (see my last comment below about forums - frsutrating when something different happens and you have no idea why. Perhaps I did not check the SUBSCRIPTION checkbox - if would be nice if this were checked by default. So I guess it's my fault. But I still say "user-hostile").

I don't think I ever saw a PM - and thus nothing ever happened.

Personally, I hate ALL forums and their software because they are all incredibly user-hostile. Please don't be offended. None of them out there have my blessing.

I am not offended, and I am sure most of the community are not.

Now that we have cleared up the fact that I did send you a PM about the wiki authorship and you have found it can we let that rest in peace? The forum software is pretty good and you should get emails from any thread that you have subscribed to? I do?

I am in one of my nice steeb moods, and they don't happen often ;)

It would be really handy to get your input for the wiki but to be honest we got off to a shakey start :D

Alex

Well Alex, you are definitely not an elf ;)

If thou would like to be a grand Visier then that is definitely done. But I will always see you as the Grand Master :D

BTW XJW now that Alex has sorted out my stupidity and I can stop being stupid for a little while I will get your wiki access sorted out v soon!

hello?

hello gEd, I'm here ;) trying to remember my password :p

(Follow up 1) (re) membered it finally :D easy once you can rack an old brain up into Top Gear mode! But it took time.

(Follow up 2) Once you see that I have put an addendum to this post of a PM sent to you then you will be set free as your wish on the wiki! Sorry for all delays about the wiki and posts. I got dis-heartened as I wasn't sure anyone cared, and I got exhausted by my 4 year old daughter. Wow a child is exhausting! Not sure I will make it to be a grand-daddy!

(Follow up 3) Nope not tonight :-( I get an error message:

Something is stopping me even with admin account from setting you up as an editor. Think something to do with the changes sub made.... think about 97% at least but suspect probably 100%

Gonna have to hand this over to sub in the cold light of day as I think something to do with htaccess

So should I PM Sub to request access?

It is both our glory moment. Well glory on the wiki. I will PM Mr GB now and see if we can resolve. If not a reminder from you would be most welcome in say 48 hours :D Steeb

So should I PM Sub to request access? You'd be surprised, I didn't even have a wiki account myself until about a week ago :D

I'm talking with steeb to find out how they normally create a user account, so I can look into what went wrong. I may have broken something when I manually created my account and setup it up as an admin.

Hi Dan, how annoying, I replied to this post many hours ago on my shiny android phone via gmail.... hmmm something definitely wrong must check that out ;)

AFAIK I left sub to look into this, but you are correct as of last time I looked. I have lost the ability to add anyone to NextPVR wiki accounts.

(sub, I think the last mail I sent went unanswered? And I 'think' it is def something that has happened since you moved servers?. And also did something that went outside of the manual?!!! By the manual I mean the wiki instructions. i.e. the 'proper' way to do things. i.e please why mess with it. Now it is causing extra work ;-) )

Easiest way rather than to edit last post is to say just seen PM I drafted to sub 3 or 4 weeks ago was never sent. So how could sub answer a message that was never sent! My bad. Sure we can get this sorted.

I think the problem was already there long before that (and for the record, I did following instructions for this)

sub no worries.

we are all busy. That is good.

I may be a little unsure myself. But I had no problem creating accounts before you switched servers. And I do have it in a pm from you that you say you manually edited a config file? WHY would you do that? If you are manually editing config files for pm wiki, unless you are 100% totes sure what you were doing why would you do that? Were you 100% totes sure? Hope you off away doing something nice as well as work :0)

I'm sure the problem relates to the directory permissions on the on the wiki directory on the new server. I know the old server had very loose permissions on the wiki directory. I want something a bit tighter than that, but I haven't been able to find a definitive list of what permissions pmwiki needs to be fully functional.

This isn't meant to be a competition. I am just trying to get to the bottom of this. I 100% disagree with you at the moment but am willing to be persuaded by you. Are you sure that you have added yourself as a an admin account?

Will give it a go. But only if please, unless you are going to be a wiki hero, please please please don't fart about with it again. Before asking one of us first? Surely not the biggest ask of all time ever? It is not perfect, but this is your documented product. Please don't mess without asking, long term it just causes more work, for all of us. And of course shouty me ;-)

Yay back at you the same :D

Now we have that out of the way........ ;)

The rollback does nothing for me. I now feel humble enough to bow to you and agree. This seems to be something with access permissions since the big migrate. i.e. server side related.....

I suspect there is a someone out there in the community that can fix it by editing one file?

Othwerwise not sure what to do?

Good that you locked down a load of stuff but obviously this bit locked out us wiki peeps!

Next move?

When I'm back in NZ in a few days I'll take another look. It's pretty hard for me to do anything about it from here.

Should I say 'yo yo yo' sub or 'ho ho ho' :-) Yes already in the UK we are ramping up to xmas! It seems to me every year earlier and earlier. But I am getting older and my memory is not what it was :D

I think you are back in NZ now? Either way my older years have made me more kindly and wiser and less energetic ;)

I don't think I have any further input on this other than saying that it seems to be an access permission resulting from when you moved servers? Not sure I can advise how to sort? And after years of being a wiki fascist I realise the error of my ways. It is what it is. It is really good that some peeps still want to take the time to change a few things. BUT actually do we REALLY NEED it?

Dunno, let's see what can be done and talk it though?

Thanks as usual, there will be an xmas donation coming your way from this household as we still use NextPVR every day via Kodi (well until box gave BSOD a week ago!). Hoping to rebuild the box before xmas
