Tried to copy the new mvpmcx2 over to the share and couldn't - no permissions to do anything with the old one. Couldn't take ownership, either.

Unplugged the PCH, went down to the PC and the file had gone! Mission accomplished

Right you are, you can't upgrade the file because it is in use (you may have noticed the same for GB-PVR executable files). To upgrade mvpmcx2 you need to exit from GB-PVR back to the PCH screen using the Power key on the remote. After you make the change you can run the GB-PVR script.
