    Thanks - yes sleep does work with the lid down - recording starts ok. My sleep is hybrid sleep.

    I'd just stick with sleep. It's less effort for the laptop to write the entire contents of RAM to and from disk during hibernation, which means it then wakes faster and uses about £1 more of electric a year.
