I've played w/ this setting in ffdshow and ac3....what does setting it low or high do? I must be listening for the wrong thing, because I can't put my finger on what changes.

IIRC, a lowpass filter takes out any sound that has a frequency above the one you specify. So if you create a lowpass filter with a frequency of 0 you would hear nothing, and with 20000 you would here pretty much everything humanly possible ;-)

Ahhh....that makes sense. I can see why it would be hard to distinguish between values. Even newly heard sounds could just make you think they were being lifted by vol, bass, etc, and not just being "added".
