I know some people don't like these 'generic' questions but will ask it anyway! I have 512mb ram at the moment in my htpc, would an extra 512mb be a worthwhile investment?

i would say yes,

i went from 256 to 1280 and well the difference was huge, with a program like gbpvr that can use a lot of ram the more ram you have the better.

it also means you can run more crap in the background (comskip etc).

There is a combo of facotrs at work: processing power and ram. For the processor you have, it would be worth it, because you have the power to take on a lot of extra tasks.

For someone w/ a weaker system, 512 would be fine, since it wouldn't be taking on enough extra work to use the extra ram. I have a 1.8Ghz system, and never get beyond the 768Mb or ram I have to get into virtual mem.

Yes seeing other peoples specs it does seem bit overkill for htpc! Trouble is I want it to be stable and I know if I start installing games, apps etc on it I'll end up having to reinstall Windows every couple of months!

I upgraded from 256MB to 1G before installing GBPVR. Running multiple apps are a lot quicker now and I'm sure GBPVR is faster than it would've been. Before you buy, check with Circuit City. Last week Circuit City was having a great deal on memory after rebates. I bought two 512MB for $24.99 each after rebates. Big Grin
