I'll give it a shot; anybody better acquainted with the MVP can jump in and correct my mistakes.
The MVP is basicly a network appliance that runs a form of Linux. It has a minimal amount of onboard storage; just enough to store a network bootloader. The bootloader finds a server on the network that will provide an image copy of the Linux OS, including any applications you want to run on the MVP. The dongle is that image copy.
