I picked up a 997MHz Pentium III (yeah, not really that fast) to drop in to a box which currently has a Celeron 500 or something in it.

I'm sure I've done this in the past without problems but XP won't even safe boot with the new chip (gets to mup.sys and hangs). Everything works fine with the old chip.

Do I really have to install XP again with the new chip installed?

I tried reloading the BIOS defaults without luck...

Cheers, Antony.

This is't really a general support forum but....

What is happening is that somewhere after mup.sys is loaded XP is finding a hardware fault that is beyond where logging stops. This is almost certainly to do with the hardware change you have made. You can find loads of information about this just by googling "mup.sys". When I do it the very first hit is relevant.

My guess is that reloading XP will not make it go away and you might not even get that far. Are you sure that your processor/mobo/memory combination are compatible??

Sounds like a hardware or BIOS issue. I would check the manufacturers site to be certain your board will support a PIII. You need to check if the CPU expects PC133 or PC100 ram too.

I had thought I'd done my homework...

Old processor was a Celeron 950 (100 x 9.5)
New processor is a Pentium III 933 (133 x 7.0)

The board does support a 133 bus speed.

So I took a closer look at the RAM (this machine is a Frankenbox made up of odd bits lying around) and tested it out to find one of the stick is only PC100!

I'll change it over and report back...

Thanks team!

While were on the subject of franken 'puters, does anyone know of a place online to pick up a 370 133mhz mobo used or refurbished on the cheap?

And don't say Ebay. $25 for a mobo is a great deal. Until you add in the $17 shipping. Rolleyes

I find something fundamentally wrong with that considering I can get a brand new one for $50 with shipping elsewhere on the net.

I only ask because I have a p3 1 gig sitting here without a home & i'm just looking for an extra system to play back recordings, xvid & dvd's on an old SDTV.

On this path - can anyone recommend a RAM utility for getting info out of unmarked sticks like size, speed etc?

I've used memtest86 to TEST memory but it doesn't give me info...

I want to mark all of these odd sticks I've got here...

I would try a "Repair" of XP, and it will redetect all of the hardware. Or put it back to functioning, go in to device manager, and remove ALL devices, including hidden ones. Then power down, swap chip, and power up.

BTW, if you're paranoid, ghost the drive to a backup, and mess with that.

You could try PC-Wizard.
Get it here : http://www.cpuid.com/pcwizard.php

It gives you all the information about your computer you need.

Have fun.
