Hey Mike,
Does the ADS unit use the UPnP protocol, or proprietary streaming software?

sub Wrote:It basically comes down to how the manufactures have implemented their device. Hauppauge used this remote UI mechanism which proved to be pretty straight forward for me to hook into, and I'm sure this has directly lead to sales (positives for everyone).

A lot of hardware companies try to make software, too, with often dismal results. I wish they'd realize they could sell more by integrating with what people are already using.

sub Wrote:All the devices I've seen with the Sigma Designs chipset have ended up using their own interface running on the device, with no prospects of using a remote UI. This could be worked around, but it would take a manufacturer that was prepared to work with me (provide technical info etc). Anyone have any contacts? To set expectations correctly...I suspect there is very little chance of us finding a company that is willing to do this.

I think you know this, but the Roku platform is open. It doesn't use the Sigma chip, though. The PixelMagic people seem pretty responsive on the forums for the HD MediaBox (I don't have one to review). They seemed open to adding UPnP. I don't know as much about the others listed in this (outdated) spreadsheet: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=585212

Yes, the Roku device seemed the most open, and I'm sure I could implement a client for it, but given its current supply issues I dont think its a viable option. This may change if they start supplying them again.

The documentation is very sparse, but I don't believe the ADS is UPnP. I tried running the BTV UPnP Server, and the ADS did not see it.

Definitely - free SDK, Linux-based. There's already a Myth frontend and some other plugins that are better than what comes with it (from what I've read). Hopefully they aren't joking about more being available this summer. I think the Roku only has component and VGA, though - no DVI.

At least these are getting popular enough to give us options: Avel Linkplayer2, Snazio, TViX HD5000, Zensonic Z500, Buffalo LinkTheater, etc.

The Buffalo LinkTheater PC-P3LWG/DVD has a customizable XML Based UI.

So i think it would be possible to completely integrate it with GBPVR, just like the MVP.

According to post 5 here, perhaps the LinkPlayer2 can also accept some remote UI: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthrea...inktheater

Something else I remembered - the Roku can only do mpeg in hardware. It needs UPnP server to transcode to do mpeg4. Also, this thread talks about the livelyness of Roku HD: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=608497

I just bought the ADS Media Link this afternoon. It's on clearance here:

I'll report back once I get it hooked up and working.
