TV remote controlling PVR-150

Somehow, my Magnavox TV remote is able to control my PVR-150. Some of the buttons, like the number ones, actually work. Others don't do what they're expected, making it pretty annoying. Is there a way to change what IR codes the PVR-150 remote uses to prevent this interference? Thanks

Nothing strange here, Magnavox is a Philips company. The Hauppauge remotes use a Philips designed remote protocall called RC5 or RC6. So some buttons/features will be the same but others may not. The MCE remote uses the RC6 code set which is a little newer.

No I don't think you can prevent it unless you try a different remote receiver, like MCE, with a different remote. You could try changing the receivers position so you have to point the remote at and angle. For instance place the receiver way off to the right of your TV so its less likely to receive your TV remote's signal.

Actually I can think of one way you could fix the problem but it would take some work. You can expand the function of the Hauppauge remote receiver to receive other RC5 or RC6 codes. So if we could figure out what codes are being used by your TV remote we could program a universal remote with different codes and edit your irremote.ini to inculde the new codes rather then the existing ones that match your TV remote codes.

This would require a One-For-All remote, and getting to know JP1 (an interface for remote hacking) It's do able but it's not easy.

I had another thought. The irremote.ini file contains info on at least 3 remotes hauppauge has had over the years. Its possible the interfearance is related to only one set of remote codes. by disableing the oldest set of remote codes (which is known to have problems with TV remotes) you may be able to keep your TV and 150 from getting confused. I need to review the irremote.ini to tell you what changes to make. I'll try to figure it out and get back to you soon.

Ok this might work but the more I dig into the irremote.ini the more I think it's not. If it works it will not on the MVP, just the PC. The reason it might not work is because the IR codes are still being received by the PVR 150. The code might still be the same as another existing code. The number keys are a good example. the code sent for the number 1 is the same for the oldest remote as well as the newer ones. Well give it a try and see what happens. Just make sure you back up your irremote.ini before you begin.



Open youre irremote.ini (c:\WINDOWS\Irremote.ini) save a back up copy.

read the fist few lines and you can see what needs to be done:

So we need to remove the references to the classic remote.
under "system code" I would remove the first line:

Then remove the whole section that contains the button map's for the HCWClassic.

Save your changes and restart the IR program. Then point your TV remote at the PVR 150 and see what happens. It might work.

I just had a go at this and it works ok. Good job as well, was driving me nuts.
I have a WinTV PVR USB2 which I think is just a PVR150 in a box.

Now the trick is to remember what you did so next time you re-install the hauppauge software and it overwrites your irremote.ini you're not scratching your head trying to figure out what the heck went wrong

I always make a backup of my irremote.ini file just in case...

yeah, but you can bet I wont! The day will come when the WinTV Radio application starts appearing seemingly on its own again and getting me going "wha.........?"
