Does dual-channel work with two DDR2 sticks which are same brand/model without having to buy dedicated dual-channel RAM?

As I understand it DDR means Dual Data Rate so it should work as long as your motherboard and BIOS support it (they maybe an option in setup).

On the Post screen it should tell you if the ram is working in DDR mode.

ddr means double data rate, meaning twice the front side bus speed...
[133 bus + ddr = 266]
dual channel ram is matched identical pairs of ram, that is run at twice again that rate...
[200fsb x 2 =400[DDR] x2 =800[dual channel DDR]
dual channel is run at twice the speed, cuz it accesses both at same time...
and you have to have at least 800mhz ram to get HyperThreading to crankup..
[it uses the concurrentness to feed the dual cpu config, each cpu kinda getting it's own channel to the ram..]
but if they're EXACTLY internally the same you should be ok..
and you do have to make sure it's enabled in bios..mem speed in ios should be 800mhz..

they don't have to be identical sticks but it does help the chances, ive seen different brands of RAM work in dual channel in the past(although rare), ive seen similar sticks(same brand but a few months apart) not work together aswell but buying 2 sticks of RAM at the same time that are the same will work fine, timings don't always have to be identical since the quicker stick can slow down to match the slower one

pBS, you're making some major assumptions, for one dual channel doubles bandwidth, it does NOT double clock speed

Dual Channel has NO effect on HyperThreading(assuming he has it in the first place) since HT is not affected by RAM in that way, it simply uses a small part of the processor to emulate a second one so that windows acts like multiple processors are there(kind of a poor explanation)
