An Athlon system is the worst place to put sub-par memory, as due to bandwith they are the most demanding. Even if you don't get obvious visible faults, the system won't run smooth.

BTW there's a new memtest version (memtest86 latest version dates back to 2004) that is being somewhat more updated, memtest+.

I usually try both, (have a bootable usb key with a boot menu) and on faulty memory/hardware memtest+ is usually the fastest to spot them.
