Hi, after being happy with my GBPVR for quite a while i decided to be brave and try some new skins etc.

I only use the software through my hauppauge MVP.

First off i intstalled the Plain Jane pack as i thought it would give me the look i needed with minimal effort. it did indeed do this i was really impressed at how simple and how quick i got it to look as i wanted. but then i realised that on the computer that acts as the server, GBPVR was using near 200mb of memory, therefore paging for england! this is in comparison to the usual 70mb(ish) that it used before PlainJane.

a few things i tried,

i thought it might of been becasue i was flicking through all the different skins so i restarted.

tried turning the standard blue skin back on.

thought it might be one of the pugins that came with it, turned them off one at a time. but even with all turned off its still hammering my memory.

i was wondering if i could get it to use less ram? if not can it be removed as if never installed?

if not i will upgrade from my 97.9 to the new one and start over again.

kind regards

kevo

I doubt that the skin itself is increasing your memory usage, it probably is one of the plugins. Even then, because of C# garbage collection, I'm not sure that the figure you are seeing is current memory usage or peak memory usage.

Switch back to the blue skin.

Copy all the files in the plugins directory to a safe location then remove them from the plugins directory.

Reboot your computer and check your memory usage.

Switch to the Plain Jane skin and check your memory usage.

Maybe sub, or anyone, can comment on memory usage and garbage collection?

Its probably one of the plugins installed with PlainJane. Try deleting all the DLLs from the plugins directory, then see if you still have the problem.

brilliant, cheers guys, removed all the dll's and its back down to 50mb.

i'll put them back in one by one and update you on which one is causing the problem, incase your interrested.

thanks again. love the software, and it looks even better with the plainjane skins.

edit: heres what ive got, some seems quite strange actually!

no plugins - 50mb

using the plugins one at a time,

webcams - 60 at idle, 75 when browsing cam images

apperancemanager - 65mb at idle, 110mb when flicking through changing apperance, and idles back at 70mb when saved apperance.

heres a wierd one, video archiver - idle 30mb, when i click into it it goes up to 45mb, but all im getting is an hour glass spinning at the top. is it building a database of my archived video files?

My guess is that it is the video archive plugin, assuming that you have it enabled. I cache a lot of stuff to improve performance when fetching lists. As Old Dog point out alot of it is actually freed memory that has not been garbage collected. I have 1GB of RAM and my UI (from an MVP) is very responsive even when doing other things on the PC while the kids are watching in the other room. My machine runs around 200MB allocated to gbpvr all the time. Unless you see some performance problem I think you can just ignore it.

Not sure this is pertinent but I'll mention it anyway...

When saving changes in Appearance Manager, all instances of GBPVR.exe on the computer are restarted, including the instances for each MVP.
