I am talking about media players used on a network....players like the Linkplayer2, TVIX 5000, MB200, MVP, DSM 520, Media Gate, Zensonic 500 just to name a few.

Yes you can play 264 on a PC or on some handheld devices but there are no networked media players that support it yet...which is why I said you would need an HTPC to play 264 on a TV.

For viewing/streaming video from a pc to a TV there are two main methods; one is HTPC (Home Theater PC) and the other is Networked media players.

And as far as I know there are very very few...if any... DVD players that will play 264.

DO not get me wrong, 264 is looking more and more like the lossy video format of future...in many parts of Europe DVB streams are broadcast in 264 and it is a very good format for reducing file size while maintaining PQ. BUT for now since the primary way to get video in 264 is to convert it from some other format...since there is a current severe limitation on where it can be played...and finally that it is a very slow cpu intensive conversion then IMHO it is not worth using...at the moment.

Aha, now I understand.....:o Netgear has just announced their EV A700 networked media player supporting H264...... and there is a "thing" called Nexperia (from Medaibolic/Philips) and the Buffalo Linkheater. but you're right, it's still not a common good.........

I'm confused, I've been encoding 640x480 x264 MP4s using MeGUI and am able to play them on my MVP via GBPVR with no problem. I chose that format because it worked on both my iPod and the MVP, and it looks great for the size it takes up on my hard drive.
