When watching live tv it would be nice to able to push a button that puts it into record mode instantly, then if you come out of live tv or push the button again it stops recording and adds the recording to the recordings folder.

The record button could be a good button for this.

The reason for this is when I am watching tv sometimes I only want to capture say a replay of a goal or try.  But the time you have set a manual recording the moment has passed.

The file could be named using the channel name and progam name.

Thanks once again, its nice to see GBPVR taking shape. Only wish I could do something to help.

I know with a direct tv tivo unit (maybe all tivo units) you can press record and have it save the current program you are watching. For example, I start watching a movie and decide I want to record it. I press record and everthing in its buffer for that show is saved (needed for pausing live TV etc.) and the rest is recorded as well. Something like that would fulfill your wish too I would think.

Yes, tivo is pretty good for that if you press record while you are watching a programme it will save the current buffer to the programme as well. So if you are 15 minutes into an episode of friends and the missus insists you go and cut the grass just hit record and the entire episode will be saved.

I've had my tivo for nearly three years and other than hacking 2 x 120 gig drives in and adding a few bits and pieces like padding and web interface it's pretty much as it was. Quite amazing for a machine that has just 32MB of memory and a decidedly average powerPC processor.

The other feature I really like is the wishlist. I don't particularly use it to record all films in which John Wayne appears (though that is quite cool if you've got rich programme guide data) my particular use is to record all programmes which have "NHL or Hockey" in the title. That way I don't have to maintain the season pass when NASN or whoever change the name of the programme from "NHL Live" to "Hockey Night in Canada".

Well it's been added to the wishlist so I'll sit and wish.

New convert to GBPVR here.

I love it but really need an "instant record" facility too. Despite this being several months after this thread was alive, I can't find the facility. Is it there or will it be added in the near future?

As a comment to the TiVo-like feature of saving the buffer, one problem with this is that those of us using slower machines find that it makes them grind to a halt. I quite like SageTV too but it does this and basically makes my EPIA M10000 system unusable once it starts recording everything.

One other quick comment to save opening another thread; it takes ages to get into 'Live TV'. Any reason why and could it be sped up a bit please?

Many thanks and keep up the good work, Sub, it's a great program!

I do have plans to do this soon, but its just not made it to the top of the priority list yet. If you take look at the change.log file, you'll see I havn't just been sitting around doing nothing. I've been busy.

There is a few reasons. I use another process (GBPVR Recording Service) to perform all recording, this incurs a bit of overhead but does give the advantage of being able to record without the GB-PVR user interface running. Additionally the first use of LiveTV takes a little longer than subsequent usage, as it needs to connect and authenticate with the recording service.
Also, because I need to maintain compatibility with a broard set of clients (software playback/mvp/pvr350/xcard) I need to aim for the lowest common denominator which means writing to files for all video (a bit more overhead).
Speed of LiveTV playback startup also varies quite a bit depending on if you're using MVP/PVR350/XCard/Software. If you're using software, and are using XP SP1 or higher, you may want to enable the 'Use SBE if available' option which can really help with this.
