Running this on a win2k setup, and is looking a real alternative to making the leap to linux and mythTV.

Variable bit rates would be nice to see to keep that disk usage down??

Have fun with 'nix and myth. I fought with my machine for several weeks trying to get it up and stable, it never happened. Had XP and GBPVR setup in (I think) 2 days.

Oh yeah and be sure to say hi to the a-hole myth devs who could really give a sh--t about you and your problems, or whether you live or die. Such great people they are </sarcasm>

I'm sticking with sub all the way, at least he's not an a-hole, or if he is he sure hides it well [Image: biggrin.gif]

Oh yeah, and instead of being a cheap azz why not just go buy a bigger hard drive? They aren't that expensive. I've got a 160GB in mine, I can record pretty much all day long.

Do I hear a disgruntled myth user....

Not so cheap to upgrade the hdd as i'm running from a laptop... Yeh I know USB/firewire externals are the way to go, but I'm trying to keep the decible level down with as few extra boxes whirring away as possible.... And the missus has only just let me leave the laptop out in the sitting room, so another box could be a health hazzard!
Also it' not just the HDD space, but also the no of episodes that will fit on a DVD! So I suppose reencoding is the only option, or maybe writing a plugin to export the record list so that winTV can do the recording?? Sort of defeats the object a little though!

Were you trying with the knopmyth distro?

Very disgruntled, and I couldn't even get knoppmyth working properly.

I didn't realize you were using a laptop, that's a rather unorthodox solution.

Here's to hoping once they make a plugin (or something) that cuts the commercials out of the recorded shows, the file sizes will be smaller [Image: biggrin.gif]

and one that can accurately detect the start and end points of the programm. Even when they have been delayed by the broadcaster [Image: tounge.gif]

At least cutting comercials doesn't need a re-encode... when using womble

Am sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I know it's not possible to record in VBR from a live source.

Recording in WINTV200 from a pvr-usb2 external the default setting for DVD standard play profile is 8000 vbr... (between 6000 min and 8000 max) Thats of the top of my head on the actual bit rates, but it's definitely vbr.

I thought VBR was only possible with 2-pass encoding, which can't be done on the fly. However, having dug around the web, it seems there is 1-pass VBR encoding after all.

At least I was right about being corrected Wink
