set top box controlling gbpr?

hi, i have been lurking quite a while, but not posting to much (mostly just reading and learning) I was wondering if someone could help me out.

Is there a plugin or is it possible to control gbpvr from a set top box? For example could i set a timer on my dishnetwork vip222box to have gbpvr start recording. the vip222 can have timers set to start vcrs and dvd recorders, can this be used to start a recording on a htpc?

I'll go with no.

But I think you've got the HTPC thing backward, You use the HTPC to control or work in conjunction with the STB not the other way around.

Typically most people use an IR Blaster to send a signal from the PC to STB to change the channels in preperation for scheduled recording, if you don't have an IR Blaster (which I'm guessing you don't) then you can use the vip222 timer set to record a show to a VCR - which will simply change the channel on the dish STB and at the same time have GB-PVR scheduled to record from the STB.

I did it for a while, the down side is that you if you want to watch a differn't channel you can't - unless you have another STB.

I have an IR blaster, but i bought my pvr-150 card used and the person i got it from said the blaster didn't work. I am going to try it anyways but was just looking for a "Plan B." I think if the IR blaster i have doesn't work i will just find a new one.

Another part of why i was thinking let the stb control the htpc is that the guide from dishnetwork could be used.

You don't have to, you simply setup GB-PVR to receive a TV Schedule (like Zap2it - but I thinks there is something else for the dish). And you use that to schedule recordings.

does the blaster light up red?

if it does... it works, you will just have to mess around with placement (and try taking it out of that little case) because it is really weak.

thanks, ill try it out when i get home from work today. i could probably set it right in front of the ir reciever on my stb.

try different orientations for the LED to, they are pretty directional, being strongest coming straight out of the tip

Know all about it, I'm in the same boat. I'm confident the community will come up with an alternate solution, after all earlier versions of GB-PVR never used Zap2it. Something will come out.
