Would it be possible to implement this - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Widescreen_signaling
As far as I am aware, line 23 of PAL is the first line of the image. So, if the first line of the PVRX2 GUI was encoded to this specification, TVs could be controlled automatically. The config.xml could even have a field for the control bits in the AspectRatios section.
Another option would be to use the parallel port to toggle PIN 8 of a SCART connector to enable widescreen signalling based on some field in config.xml (I've this set up myself, using a toggle switch instead of the parallel port because I want the GBPVR box SCART to be on widescreen 99% of the time).
