No audio via MVP when playing digital sourced recordings

I'm pretty sure that this is a CODEC issue but I don't know how to solve it.

On the machine proper I can play back ALL my recorded shows regardless of capture source. On my 2 MVP's however I can play all the files but I get no sound on files/recordings that were made via my QAM or ATSC cards.

Also, when streaming live tv over the network I get sound when the source is analog but not when digital.

I would have never noticed this issue had it not been for my children's liking of Qubo and PBS Kids both of which are only available to us via OTA ATSC.

Your QAM/ATSC recordings most likely have AC3 audio. The MVP can only play MPEG1 Layer 2 audio.

Aha! That would explain things.

Is there anyway to transcode this on the fly? I don't usually transcode to AVI as I don't need the disk space (500gb HDD installed) and I also find that I get a severe performace hit when my system is transcoding as well as recording and playing all at once. Cancel the transcode and things run smoothly.

There is nothing built-in that will handle this. If you had been transcoding your recordings to some non-MPG file format, then the audio would have been corrected with the on the fly transcoding - otherwise there isnt really much I can suggest.

Oh well, Looks like I'll be transcoding The Saddle Club and Caillou then. Good job I don't want to watch TV during the day :}

mvpmc will decode and play the ac3 audio but it will be out of sync, but sometimes it surprises me. You might want to give it a try, just to give it a listen.

Definately no audio on the MVP. My daughter sat and watched The Saddle Club for about 20 minutes before complaining that the audio wouldn't come on.
