AnyDVD (HD) 6.4.0.0

Quote:6.4.0.0 2008 03 19
- New (Blu-ray): Removes the BD+ protection from Blu-ray discs!
(for increased compatibility with titles released by Twentieth
Century Fox :-) )
- New (Blu-ray): Added option to enable / disable BD+ removal
- New (DVD): AnyDVD ripper no longer uses the Windows filesystem, it
has now its own UDF parser / reader.

AnyDVD ripper.
- Fix (Blu-ray): Black display with some BD discs, e.g., "Layer Cake",
second release, "The Fugitive", "Wild Things" (all Region B)
- Fix (DVD): Small bugfix in "repairing defective disc structure"
function of AnyDVD ripper
- Fix (DVD): Problems with some Arccos protected titles, e.g.
"The Grudge", R1, US
- Some minor fixes and improvements
- Updated languages

Yay.
Now these expensive disks are backup-able, and the format war is over I will now consider buying into this HD stuff.

While it was impossible to protect your purchased disks and any scratches or carless handling ( or simply age- the way some of my old CDs have started to delaminate!) I was resisting buying.

Think I'll go and order a blu-ray drive.

I'm pretty close to selling mine. I have no trouble playing HD DVDs but I have a lot of issues with BluRays. So much so that I've started renting movies on HD OnDemand rather than renting the BluRay.

I havent had any issues with my BD playback on my PS3 and they are all rentals.

Will probably will look at BD PC-drives for me around x-mas. I expect the final blow to the format wars by then and prices will drop further.

Some of the CD's I bought in highschool (late 80's) have problems playing in some CD players.

With these CD's it seems parts of the reflective layer on the top of the CD has little spots missing so if I hold the CD up to a light I can see a star-feild on the CD.

Now, since these CD's are so old it's possible that it's just abuse, but the integrity of the plastic is still intact so the CD's show no actual damage caused by me.

I've since ripped them to MP3.

I didn't own a DVD player until 98 or 99 so my DVD's arn't all that old.

Plenty of problems with PC drives and since that is the only player I have, BluRay just isn't working out for me. Stick to your PS3. At least it is firmware upgradable. My brother-in-law bought stand alones and he has issues with his BluRay player. I suspect his player may not be profile 1.1

Final blow? Toshiba has already scrapped HD DVD.

Maybe when the spec is finalized and there is decent playback software, I may revisit BluRay. But for now, it's just not there. I prefer to enjoy a watchable SD movie than be frustrated with an unwatchable HD one. I still cringe thinking about my experience with Resident Evil 3.

Not to mention, Netflix is considering raising prices due to increasing their BluRay selection. It's still unsure if the price increase will affect everyone or just those with BluRay rentals enabled.

True, just waiting for the body to stop twitching.

Once production channels dry up and the 500lb gorilla starts beating its chest more. The whole "economy of scale" blah blah.

When HD-DVD finally says....

"Screw you guys, I'm going home!"

As I recall, the brand (label) that I saw over here that did it most of the time was Rocket. A friend of mine at the time reckoned they were easily fixed by just painting over the scratch. I think he just used a black texta, my mind has reservations as to how this could work.

I had bought some CD-R that were like that. I don't know how they thought that was a good idea. Seemed like if you looked at them funny the layer would flake off.

Have you got any information to support that (photos, storage and usage patterns, etc.)

yes, have a look at the following...

http://www.hounsom.net/bad_cd/Jam_CD_label_side.jpg
http://www.hounsom.net/bad_cd/Jam_CD_Close_up.jpg

The sleeve notes said it was copyright 1991, so its seventeen years old ( OMG time flies !:eekSmile Its always been kept in its jewel case, althouth it did spend some time in the car but it wouldn't have got that hot , this is England and it barely ever stops raining !

With a close look its one of the "printed on top" type that mvandere described. But like you said, cheap to make NOT cheap to buy and nothing on the box about "this CD will self distruct in 10 years" Wink

The last track is now unplayable, and i've ripped the rest to MP3 to protect them from going forever too.

Just about every 80's hairband CD I own is like that.
Hence why i've copied them & ripped them to MP3.
A couple I couldn't even copy & had to borrow my friends.
