EDIT: SOLVED (but don't know how to mark thread as solved, apologies!)

Maybe this is silly, but there are only a handful of forum posts which mention DVR-MS metadata, and none addressing this issue.

What I'd like to do is be able to take selected recordings from GB-PVR to another computer, yet keep show info associated with that file. This could then be read on another device where the GB-PVR database isn't present.

In the past I've manually kept HTML files with this info next to mpeg-2 recordings. But now that I've switched to Windows and GB-PVR, it seems apparent that unlike the MPEG standard, an advantage of Microsoft's DVR-MS is enabling fairly extensive metadata (or DRM if you are particularly twisted) to be kept within the asf container itself. Thus the recording plus show info can be portable, not reliant on the database.

I've found a tool for editing DVR-MS metadata here, but the only problem is that GB-PVR doesn't seem to populate the fields with things like the show name, description, episode number etc which are in the GB-PVR database (I've only looked at a few files though).

So what I'd like is a tool which would enable me to export a selected recording to a new DVR-MS file, to which extra metadata - including show name, description yadayada as above - from the GB-PVR database pertaining to that show is added. Please note, I'm not dissing the database, just want to make certain recordings more 'portable' Smile

Does that make sense? I'm fairly new here so please correct me if I'm missing the bleeding obvious Big Grin Wink

mpeg import will extract it for you
it doesnt get data 100% of the time for some reason either the file didnt get writen properly or the meta data was lost in the move i havnt worked that out yet
the automatic import no longer works(guy has since moved on that wrote it)

but thanks to carpevideo there is another plugin been worked on at the moment "vidimport utility"

have a look on the wiki Smile

I think if you keep them on NTFS drives then the metadata stays with them?? The data is with the file system rather than within the file.

notepad c:\path\recording.mpg:metadata.xml

Just tried it and seems to work. (I know zilch abaout metadata!).

These are actually two separate things
First: is the alternate data stream metadata.xml that gbpvr adds to recording - it contains the typical recording info that gbpvr keeps.

Second: Dvr-ms, as mentioned encapsulate certain "metadata" within itself.

r76 if you copy a gbpvr file to another machine you can look at the gbpvr metada using the method mentioned above.

(notepad c:\path\recording.mpg:metadata.xml)

If you have gbpvr on the machine you are moving the files to you can import that file to the recordings using vidImport (or mpegImport) and it will retain the gbpvr metadata.

If you transcode you will lose the metadata unless you do something like

more < oldfilename.mpg(or dvr-ms):metadata.xml > newfilename.avi:metadata.xml

Although now that I think of it the filename is embedded in the metadata so it may require a bit more fiddling to make it perfect.

Cheers, that's all useful stuff, thanks for the really quick help! I will investigate this further at the weekend as I'm currently trying to get a new version of Opera working with my email right now.

OK, I think I might see where there might be an issue - if I set in Config, Misc2, BDA multiplexer to record as TS mux and run
Code:
notepad c:\path\recording[color=#ff0000].ts[/color]:metadata.xml
I get
Code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<recording>
  <filename>F:\Manual Recordings\BBC ONE_20080614133000.ts</filename>
  <channel>BBC ONE</channel>
  <status>READY</status>
  <startTime>2008-06-14 13:30:00</startTime>
  <endTime>2008-06-14 13:40:43</endTime>
</recording>
That's just from a manual recording, so guide data missing obviously. But it is the sort of info I'm looking for, yay!

But if I record as DVR-MS and run
Code:
notepad c:\path\recording[color=#ff0000].dvr-ms[/color]:metadata.xml
I get a message saying "no xml metadata found, do you want to create one?".

I guess I want to edit my wish for the wishlist to "add xml metadata to dvr-ms files" Smile

Strange - it works for me. I just set a quick recording in dvrms format to try it.

Quote:C:\notepad "J:\gbpvr\Tennis Artois Championships\Tennis Artois Championships_20080614_13001640.dvr-ms:metadata.xml"

and got back this

Quote:<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<recording>
<filename>J:\gbpvr\Tennis Artois Championships\Tennis Artois Championships_20080614_13001640.dvr-ms</filename>
<channel>BBC1 North East</channel>
<status>READY</status>

<subtitle></subtitle>
<description>Sue Barker presents live coverage of the Artois Championships semi-finals from the Queen's Club in London. At this stage last year, American Andy Roddick eased past Russian Dmitry Tursunov in straight sets while Nicolas Mahut won an all-French encounter against Arnaud Clement to reach his first ATP Tour final. Commentators are John Lloyd, Andrew Castle, Greg Rusedski, Mark Petchey and Jason Goodall.</description>

Don't forget you need quotes round things that have spaces in filenames.

Yeah, my mistake - you're absolutely right. I only looked at dvr-ms files which had been run through VideoRedo - they have some encapsulated metadata but not the attached xml metadata I guess (I forgot I'd trimmed a couple of the episodes I'd tested, I thought they were the raw gbpvr recordings!). :o

OK this whole thread is pretty redundant now I guess! So enjoy the rest of the tennis if you're watching it - that's what I'm going to do. Cheers! Big Grin
