sporadic closed captions?

I only turn on display of closed captions once in a while, when family is visiting.

I did this today, and noticed that some recordings had really sporadic closed captions on playback. A tested culprit is Alton Brown: Good Eats.

There will be captions for a few seconds, then nothing for a couple of minutes, and then captions again for a bit.

I'm using VRM9 Custom for playback, with Intervideo and Intervideo NonCSS tested. This is not an HD feed, I'm regular cable.

I know a few people here use closed captions; any tips? Is it just me and I have something to troubleshoot or are they hit and miss with the captions on Good Eats/ the Food Network channel?

Try using different video codec.
I am using Nvidia codec to see cc in analog channels and ATI codec to see cc in ATSC channels. Because ATI codec sometimes causes crashes on transitions from main feature to commercial, sometimes I use Cyberlink codec (or is it intervideo, i don't remember now). The 3-rd codec sometimes garbles the cc for me , just like you described.

You can change codecs from GBPVR menu (no need to go to configuration menu which will restart recording service and will screw up whatever you are recording at the moment).
