Blu ray burners

I just noticed a set of 25 single layer BD discs at Newegg on sale for $50 ($.08 per gig). My last hard drive was 1TB for $100 ($.10 per gig). Since I think the time is fast approaching where I might opt for a blu ray burner instead of another drive, I figured I'd see what you guys know.

My experience with DL DVD burning was not so good. I have an LG super multi drive that likes to reject some DL DVD brands. Recommendations at forums: only buy verbatim discs. I'd like to avoid this issue on blu ray if possible.

Is there an enthusiast favorite burner with high tolerances for variation in disc manufacture (I'd really like it to at least be able to burn anything with a brand name)? Have any of you gone the BD burning route? Is there any real concern about trip and quad layer BDs ever becoming mainstream and needing a new drive to burn them or are they forever vaporware? Any set-top blu ray players that support Divx or xvid playback?

Haven't tried BR recording yet, but I have a done a lot of DL DVD recordings. I have three different Samsung DL drives and they all work flawlessly. I use Windata DVD+R DL 8X discs which I buy at Microcenter ($11.99 for 20).

However, there is a big difference in the reliability of the Software. The worst is Roxio, which seems to fail at the transition to the second layer. The most reliable is the old DVD Decrypter. I first create an ISO image and then record to avoid any drive to drive issues.

I use imgburn, dvddecrypter's legal little brother. I'm just archiving old recorded episodes I don't want to delete. Once I got my first batch of (I suspect) perfectly good, but unburnable DL DVDs (it won't even start burning, it errors out while prepping), I went ahead and tried roxio and an old Nero that came with my burner with no luck.

My googling indicated a lot of burners had issues with DL burning with the same error imgburn gave me, and the universal suggestion was to just buy verbatim.

I've been considering buying some Amazon Basics DLs which are amazingly well-priced, but they have mixed batches. Some of the orders are ricoh underneath, some are of a less reliable ilk. I hope blu ray burning won't be that screwed up, where you need to know the fraking disc id before buying. :mad: I have little intention of buying another DVD burner, or else I'd look into samsung.
