There is no sign of any obvious errors in there.

If you record a program, can you play it smoothly in a non-directshow player like vlc?

Hmm..I was testing this stuff out in Live TV...then I read that Live TV is essentially playback and recording together...perhaps too taxing?

I'm doing yet another channel scan, going through Whurlston's Inital Setup guide and trying to make sense of all this.

I've got a cable coming out of the wall. Through that cable we get our internet service (Comcast) in Central Maryland. But we're also getting some type of television...I just can't tell what kind exactly...so I'm experimenting with settings. Also trying to learn about XMLTV...

Thanks a bunch.

Its only the same as recording and playing when you're using timeshift mode, which isnt the default. There is a few other differences. Regardless, you want to work out which of those two is causing you a problem.

At least by recording and playing that recording outside of GB-PVR, you know the recording side of things is fine (if it plays fine in that external player).

Okay, thanks for the help, Sub. I'm learning as I go, and have done lots of searches, but I'm pretty sure the minutia of cable and video terminology is easy for lots of the people on here. I'm still learning the absolute basics...so I need to sort of start from the beginning. Perhaps someone can clarify for me a few things:

1. If I have a cable coming out of my wall from Comcast, through whom we get our internet but have purchased NO cable television service, then what type of tv transmission is this? I'm assuming QAM.

2. I have successfully installed my 2250 and set up two different analogue capture sources: the first is called HVR-2250 - Analogue - I. This is set as Capture Device #1. Likewise the other source is called HVR-2250 - Analogue - II. This is set as Capture Device #2. Is this the correct way to set up the analogue sources? They seem to function okay, but the picture is not so good on account of the fact that they're analogue...

3. I guess the "Analogue HighDef Recording Plugin is useful only for stuff like the Hauppauge PVR, correct? So I'll NEVER use this setting with my 2250? I like to eliminate details if I can...

4. What is the difference between "Hauppauge HVR-2250" & "Hauppauge HVR-2250 (QAM)" in the pull-down menu? I think I need the QAM version. Can the non-QAM version be safely ignored for my particular situation?

As you can see, I'm not too schooled on this stuff. I've heard GB-PVR was the best of the best, and I can see a LOT of work went into it. I'm looking forward to learning the ins and outs with your help. Thanks a bundle.

PS-My initial playback problems (the impetus for this thread) will have to wait until I can safely get these little questions resolved. Gotta crawl before you can walk...

Most North American cable networks carry a mixture of analog cable channels, digital cable channels (QAM).

Yes, they're set right. If you've created two analog capture sources, one for each tuner. (if they werent analog, then you wouldnt see anything)

You could also try setting up a QAM capture source to see if you get anything.

The 'Analog HighDef Recording Plugin' is only used for the Hauppauge HD-PVR.

Use the "QAM" one for digital cable. Use the non-QAM for over-the-air ATSC digital channels (via an antenna).

Wow, quick. Thanks. And thanks for being so patient. I'll have this up and running in no time, and then if there are any playback problems...we'll address them with a system that's at least properly set up.

And THANK YOU for the hard work you put into this program.

OK, so if (and I think this is related) many HD movies won't play back very well on my system (frames go by too slowly and separates from the audio...laggy), where do you think the bottleneck is? Is it the video card, the processor, or software? I suspect whatever it is that's causing the backup with HD films is going to create a real problem with HD capturing...Any help or insight would really be great. Thanks.

OK, so in my desperation I decided to create another partition and reinstall XP. After installing all the basics, and only the basics, things seem to be MUCH smoother. It must be that my computer had too much junk muddying the waters. Thanks for the help, folks, and I'll report back with an update as soon as I know more.
