wake intel pc with mvp remote!

well i finally found the silly CIR dongle that can be used on a Intel motherboard as a mce remote..

designed to be mounted internally, it's pretty small..
i thin blasters are just external ir eyes, and a detection circuit to tell how many are plugged in...[not included]

nice thing is, seems *all* the CIR compatible receivers can use RC5 [mvp silver remote,etc] remotes for wake and commands...[now why doesn't it work on mce dongles? grrr ]
that dongle plugs in Intel Media series board CIR header, i haven't found a blaster, but it does have dual blaster capability and separate header for ir eyes..

i have also found schematics for making one..

the driver comes on intel cd, it should be compatible with any soft that can drive mce remotes..

it's same setup as hauppauge "WinTV 23885/7/8 Consumer IR" setup..which can also use RC5 remotes to to wake system....
anybody have one of those? i'm assuming it's a mce lookalike possibly plugged into usb..
[driver "hcw85cir.inf" is almost identical to intel's]

a mce dongle is going to be simlar in capabilities, but it can't be woke from RC5 remote..[even tho it knows how to decode signals.]
so that's why i'm getting one, and use my old MVP 45 button remote alone with sleep/wake ability..
i'll try to see if i can't use the RC5 power key code on MCE dongle...but they look quite different..

if anybody has any insights into translating one to the other let me know any ideas..

from reading the schematics and pinouts, it appears that the motherboard contains all the electronics for receiving ir and blasting..it's only the 'learning mode' eye that requires electronics..

so that means, only a ir receiver eye [4$http://www.radioshack.com/product/index....d=2049727] and ir emitter diode [2$ for strong ones http://www.radioshack.com/product/index....id=prod_cs ] are all that's required to use this with a normal mce or RC5 remote [no learning available]
a couple resistors and a capacitor are added to receive section for power noise filtering..that's actually optional but recommended for extra stability..

looks like the learning requires a wide band ir eye and protocol decoder..

or just buy that preassembled one from above and buy some high-output emitters to hook up for blasters..[just the ir led diode] or yank them from a good old remotes..

to hook up blasters, just have to connect the ir eye and short the 'jack detect' pin to ground to notify that one's plugged in..get the polarity+- right and can't go wrong..

To software it should look like any other mce dongle..

I looked into this a while ago. If you want to have IR learning capabilites, you'll need a circuit with 20-30 discrete parts. The schematic is on page 4 of this PDF.

If you can forgo the learning capabilities, you can get the project done with < $10 in parts and 6 solder joints. All you need is a discrete 3-lead IR receiver (some good choices are here), a 10uF capacitor, a 100 ohm resistor, some cabling and a molex header connector (or, if you have an internal 1394 connector, you can just cut one end off and use 3 wires for the solder connections. The capacitor needs to be soldered in parallel between the +5V and ground lines. The resistor needs to be in series with the +5V line (the third diagram down on page 4 in the pdf mentioned above.) Its probably easiest to use all leaded components (i.e. with long legs). If you have moderate soldering skills, this should be a snap. You will need to connect the CIR header pins 1, 5, and 8 to the device pins Gnd, +5V, and CIR-Input, respectively.

This receiver should work just like a MCE compatible USB receiver; it will wake the computer from S3 and work with any application that accepts MCE remote commands

the unique thing is, it handles RC5 codesets too, while mce remote doesn't..
