Hello all users.

I'm finally using GBPVR, andI want to develop an archive of Tv emissions, using the feature that allows multiple recordings at the same time, with two or more tuners.

I have around 60 Gbytes of free space in my HD, and two Hauppauge WinTV 350. I know gbpvr store recordings in MPEG-2 format, my question is:

What can I do (post-processing, plugins, etc) to reduce the amount of disk space used in each recording? The quality is not a problem, it's only for a documentation use of the files.

Thanks a lot for every answer, regards.

In a word transcode. Or capture at a low rate. There are some pluguns around to transcode the capture after its complete. Could be a good idea to start here.

I have to confess I don't understand the transcoding function well, and I didn't find any readme in the plugin.

Can someone just give the broad strokes?

You could also get a Plextor ConvertX or Lifeview TV Walker, and then your recording could be in Divx or WMV format, which uses about 1/4 of the disk space as MPEG2 at any same given quality setting....

There is a file in your gbpvr directort named postprocessing.bat. It's an batchfile that's executed after each finished recording.

You can add extra tasks to be run in this batch file, for example a tool for converting mpeg to xvid.

However, it's a lot of experminents and time consuming tests to get the exact parameters for a conversion to work as you want it, so if the lack of HD space is your only motivation I would suggest you to go out and but another HD, they are really cheap these days.

Thanks for all your answers. Really interesting that fact about postprocessing.bat. I will try to find a transcoder to mpeg4 or something (I'm really lost) and probe and probe and probe...
