Newbie Needs General Advice re GBPVR or NPVR with Cable Box

I have been trying to set up IR Server Suite following the instructions. I have to fundamental questions - maybe I should post these as a new question?

1. How do you find the IR receiver location on a set top box? The instructions say I need to carefully place the blaster end over the receiver on the STB, but I"m not sure where that is. I tried clicking "Test" in IR Server Suite on the learned commands, and moving the little IR transmitter around the face of my STB, but it did not do anything.

2. The instructions say to enter the numbers "0" through "9," and "Enter," without quotes and then learn commands. Is that right, or do you enter "{0} - {9}" without quotes, or something else, when you name the learned commands?
