Significance of NPVR-assigned channel #s?

The channel numbers in NPVR seem somewhat arbitrary for my OTA ATSC stations (seems to be in scan order). Can I change these to re-order the channels in the guide or will this mess up my scheduled recordings?

The EPG number for channel mapping can be assinged nything you'd like (I think four digit max)
