The new WD TV Live boxes look pretty nice. Has anyone looked into using NPVR with them? I know you can view recordings via DLNA but I mean more along the lines of the NMT-like integration with Live TV streaming.

Western Digital has never responded to any of my email requesting there assistance which would be required to get the NPVR interface running.

That really stinks. I'm not sure why they wouldn't want to be one of the few boxes with true integration to a PVR system??

In any case, looking at the new features they now have RSS capability (presumably for podcasts) which might be able to be used along with NEWA to watch recordings. It also might be possible to add a new RSS feed to simulate a "guide" to watch live tv. I'm not sure it is worth the effort since it would not be anywhere near as nice as true integration but I am still considering trying it...

Really a shame we can't use NPVR on the WD, I have 1 and I've never had a file it couldn't play and the grandkids love watching Netflix on it.

I got one of these to try it out. I can't add "local" RSS feeds so I can't test watching Live tv but watching recordings via Samba network sharing works fine and even allows deletion. One deal breaker is that it doesn't offer skip forward/backward functionality so trying to watch recordings and skip through commercials is next to impossible. I'm also not a big fan of the music playback interface. However, it is extremely small, efficient, and video playback is perfect. I guess I will have to use my client PCs for now and hope that they eventually sell the Popbox V8 here in the US...

I dont really know anything about this device, but if it allows you to watch urls, then you can use urls like "http://<server>:8866/live?channel=2" to watch live tv from NextPVR. Where "2" is the channel number.

I don't think it can open a direct URL but it apparently can watch videos linked to in rss feeds. So my plan to simulate a guide and live tv was to create my own local rss feed listing all the "live" programs for each channel each with a link to the appropriate live tv url as you described above. Unfortunately, I am not able to test this out because it rejects any local rss feeds that you try to input (maybe it expects it to begin with 'www' - I don't know).

Martin, it's a real shame that WD won't get back to you since this box has turned out to be pretty capable and has a lot of added "online streaming services" as a bonus. It only lacks DTS-HD bitstreaming but otherwise if you could get LiveTV and the NPVR interface on there it has the potential of being even better than the SageTV HD300 which I liked so much...
