If you add the PreferAC3=1 registry setting, does it give you audio?

Yes it does! I was not aware of that setting.

@bac42x: Save the following (x86 or x64 depending on your system) in a text file with a ".reg" extention and double click it to add it to the registry (or edit the registry manually):

Bingo! Works on Win 8. Thanks sub, whurlston, and all of you that helped. You guys are great! I've loved gbpvr for years and now I can carry on with npvr.
