I used to use dvbviewer and have tried nextpvr and it seems to work great and I like the features.

One feature I lose from dvbviewer is the upnp server which allowed you to connect to the dvbserver recording service via upnp and browse the tv channels and recordings and view them.

Does nextpvr have this feature?
Is there any plans to create this feature?
and is there any alternatives , like can you use a third party upnp server to do this ?

If your aim is to connect to the npvr server and browse recordings, tv guide, schedule new recordings etc. you can always use NEWA. Connect to your npvr server computer via your favorite browser: http://ip-of-server:8866

I know about the webserver.

I meant more upnp.

For devices which you can't access a web address and they might be running manufactures software which you can't change. And this software might allow it to view files by upnp but thats all.

No, there is no upnp server.

As you say, you can probably have install a 3rd party upnp server and point it at the recording directories. This would at least give you access to your recordings.

If you can find a upnp server that can also stream URLs, then you can probably add your live tv channels by adding urls like http://<server>:8866/live?channel=123

XBMC has a very nice UPnP server. If you already use XBMC to index your recordings in TV Shows, it takes zero configuration other than turning UPNP on, and the recordings will all be laid out nicely by season and with meta art/data.

Does XBMC have a background process that can provide the UPnP service, or do you have to have the app running?

Right now the full app, but the plan is that UPnP becomes the glue between multiple XBMC clients for sharing files, metadata and resume bookmarks. They talk about a transcoding server too so the logical step is to have a separate server for this. It's kind of like Plex except done properly using open standards.

You use the display channel numbers. Rather than UPnP for LiveTV it might be easier to set these live channels up as RSS feeds.
