Does X-NEWA support comskip, season recording setup or automatic update of the recordings list in xbmc? Does it work with an MCE remote for navigation and playback control? I understand that it is external to the 'LiveTV' module, but looks quite promising in its own right. Might have to install it tonight

Semi-automatic, if you load a file in X-NEWA it can be configured to scan that directory

It uses standard XBMC remote commands, the player UI is the same as the Video Library's
