Hello,

I have NextPVR 3.11 running on my XP HTPC. All is working well on this machine coupled with XBMC.

I'm trying to allow my laptop to access NextPVR. I have NextPVR installed on the laptop as well (Win7 home).

Windows 7 can't access the shared folder, some type of permission error. I have several other folder shares on the XP machine and all work fine, and is accessible on the laptop.

The problem seems to be not allowing C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data to be shared. I have windows file share enabled (of course) and simple file/folder sharing disabled. I am sharing the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\NPVR folder, with full access granted. When I type \\192.168.0.10 into file explorer on the laptop, all the other folder shares AND "npvr" show up. However when I try and access "npvr" share I get the error "Windows cannot access blah blah." Naturally of course NextPVR can't access the db file so I get nothing.

So what's the solution? I seem to not have this issue with C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data as I have a couple shares under this path and the Windows 7 machine can access them with no problem (Owner being the default user name). So is there a way to force NextPVR to use a single user App Data folder instead of "All Users." Is there a way to force XP to allow sharing the All Users Application Data folder and any subfolders?

Thanks!

howdy red,

Some of these fellers won't hardly give you the time of day if you don't zip and attach a logs folder. Heck, I ain't sure if they would want logs from the server (Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\NPVR\Logs) or the laptop (Users\Public\NPVR\Logs). Maybe both? My memory of XP ain't real good, but I have a pretty powerful hunch that the problem might be alot like this here thread:

@zeb - logs really aren't needed for this particular problem, since what he's asking for is help with a Windows sharing issue. logs wouldn't show anything.

@poor_red_neck - zeb is right that your problem is the same as the thread he linked, but the solution will be different for XP. First, if you have XP Pro, you can disable "Simple File Sharing" and then when you right-click on a folder and go to Properties you'll have the full Sharing and Security tabs, and you'll be able to grant the proper permissions. I don't have any XP machine handy to refer to so I may not be describing it exactly right, but it's the last checkbox on the Folder Options dialog, the same one where you'd tell it to show hidden files, hide file extensions for known file types, etc. You can surely google it.

If you have XP Home, then I don't know, Home versions of Windows are a pain to deal with for things like this.

If you want to just have NPVR use a different data directory that you can share with less drama, the settings are in the registry under HKLM/Software/NPVR. Just shut down NRecord, NTray, NextPVR, copy the folder contents, update the registry, and you should be good to go.

Personally I'd move the user folder on XP, I never like the default for this reason.

Agreed, I always create the User\Public\NPVR three on XP too.

Thank you very much for the replies! Changing the data folder in the registry did the trick. I already have simple file share disabled, and went as far as granting full access to every user/group under the sharing/security settings to no avail. Changed the data folder to the user's application data folder and NextPVR loaded just fine on the laptop after sharing that folder.

After typing this thread I quickly learned that I didn't need NextPVR on the laptop to begin with... Facepalm. XBMC is on this machine as well and I just needed to point the Add-On to the HTPC. This was ignorance on my part, not understanding that the server to client relationship is just accessing a .ts video stream. Very simple indeed. Now I've have nDroid on my phone and it's really awesome!

Thanks again everyone for your assistance. I'm now trying to track down a EPG/Channel issue now that's been driving me nuts. That's another thread after some more searching/research first.
