I'm a total noob at this, so please take it easy on me. If I'm understanding this correctly I can use my android set top box with xbmc using next pvr add on to watch my satellite provider on it. but my question is how and what do I need to set up the server end to make it work? a computer with windows- linux some kind of tuner card for the computer?

Thank You for any and all assisstance.

You'd need to install NextPVR on a Windows computer, with a tuner card or capture device. In the case of a satellite provider, you'd need a Hauppauge HD-PVR, HD-PVR2 or Colossus to capture the component output of your HD satellite box, or an analog tuner like an HVR-1800 or HVR-2250 if you only want to capture SD video. Then yes, the NextPVR PVR add-on in XBMC will let you watch TV programs live or from recordings.
server: NextPVR 5.0.7/Win10 2004/64-bit/AMD A6-7400k/hvr-2250 & hvr-1250/Winegard Flatwave antenna/Schedules Direct
main client: NextPVR 5.0.7 Desktop Client; LG 50UH5500 WebOS 3.0 TV
