All recordings deleted

Last night my wife deleted a program that she had just watched (FYI it was the latest Grand Designs, she deleted it at approximately 7:30pm?). She then noticed that every recording had been deleted. I checked the computer and every file and folder that had been recorded by NPVR across two drives had been deleted, only leaving a couple of files and folders that had been placed there manually. I restarted the computer and scanned one of the drives overnight but it does not appear to be a hardware problem and that all NPVR recordings have actually been deleted. I am going to try and recover the deleted files (ouch) but I was hoping that the logs might tell the story as to how the happened so that I don't do it again! TIA.

I certainly don't recall this happening for any other user in the past, so I'm not entirely convinced this could have happened.

I can't see anything in your logs around this time. Did she use the NextPVR user interface to delete the recording, or something else (NEWA etc)?

We use the NEWA web interface exclusively. Are there any other Windows logs that might shed light on this? You are welcome to connect via TeamViewer to have a look directly if you like.

I don't personally use NEWA, and don't know much about it how it works. I've had a quick scan of the web.log around 7:30pm last night though, and can't really see much going on. When it comes to NEWA, I'm not really sure what to look for though.

I don't use NEWA myself, but I'm guessing like most web interfaces, there's a checkbox at the top of the recording list which selects all items in the list. Looks like someone deleted that first recording of "Who do you think you are", then went back to delete "Grand Designs" less than a minute later but inadvertently hit the select all checkbox. After that it was all gone in just over a minute.

if you are able to undelete many or all of those files, to get them all back into the database you will want to import the recording-backup.xml file from the NPVR data directory in Settings->Recording->Import Recordings. note that it keeps two previous days worth of backups as well, recording-backup.xml.1 and recording-backup.xml.2 (to import the .1 or .2 files, type *.1 or *.2 in the file name field and hit enter, then you'll be able to pick those files; also note there are also "recurring-backup.xml" files, you don't want to import those in this case)

edit: and now I have to go edit my database, as I wasn't paying attention to what screen I was looking at, hit enter with focus on the wrong window, imported my own recurring-backup.xml.1, and it duplicated almost all of my recurring recordings, ARGH!

edit2: a quick "delete from RECURRING_RECORDING where oid > 362" in sqlitespy did the trick

I've just confirmed that a single click in the selection checkbox at the very top of the listing sometimes has the effect of immediately deleting all items in the list! Normal action is indeed to select all items (i.e. put a tick in every checkbox in the list), however I just observed that a single click deleted everything. I confirmed this by creating a new recording and it definitely only took a single click. I'll put a bug report into the NEWA forum. Thanks for your help guys. I'll tell my wife that it was the stupid computer's fault, not hers. :-)
