I have my antenna running to my server with an Hauppauge 2255 tv tuner. On the server itself the video is great, it's only very slightly choppy. On my Raspberry pi 1 with openelec, kodi and NextPVR client addon the video is very choppy and pixelated sometimes.

I noticed NextPVR backend will sometimes say "WARNING: The DirectX runtime is not available on this machine. Software rendering instead." in red on the settings page. Other times it's not there. I'm currently running DirectX11 on Win7.

My decoders are Microsoft DTV-DVD Video Decoder.

What could be causing this?
How can I fix it?

From what I've read, the original Raspberry Pi does a very poor job of MPEG-2 playback unless you've bought and installed the MPEG2 hardware codec license.

Yes, the Rpi MPEG2 license is mandatory, in my opinion. For me, even the pi 2 was choppy for HDTV until I got the MPEG 2 license.

I posted some figures for the RPi2 a few weeks ago. From what I remember under Kodi HD/MPGE4 playback runs at about 15% processor but without the license SD/MPEG2 runs at around 65% but still plays perfectly.

HD ATSC video in Canada is MPEG2 720p or 1080i not h264 like in some countries so yes licensing the MPEG codec is differently worth it.
