Has anyone downgraded windows from win10 to win7? Is there a way to preserve installed programs or do I have to backup, wipe C: and start over?

If you did a Windows 7 system image backup before you upgraded you should be able to restore it back. Just protect any new recordings/files you want to keep since you went to Windows 10 on another drive.
I always do a system image before a major change, just in case. Also protects you if your hard drive fails. Windows 7 install disk or recovery disk can do it for you.

No this was a new laptop that was upgraded from win 10 Home to win 10 Pro. I guess I have to go the long way then...

If this is due to Windows 10 media/npvr issues, do what I did and go with Windows 8.1 instead. As good (and stable) as 7 but with a few more years support, and you can't tell the difference once installing Start Menu replacements like Classic Shell. I got a key on eBay for less than 10 quid.

a fresh win7 needs updates to the update mechanism first, so needs an update before it can do updates...lol
i use Wsus to update win7 initially,and it's faster..and you can keep copies for other machines to avoid downloading every time.. then updates will work...it's the same for all hardware..even if you start with sp1, still needs an update to update services..

I have tried win 8.1 and I don't like it so if I scrap win10 it will be win7 Ultimate... yes it needs update to the updates and it is half a days worth of job, but in the end it is a very reliable system. I have had no trouble running win7 on a new MB, even the latest updates was smooth sailing. I will look into Wsus, haven't heard of it before. The only thing I'm not looking forward to is installing all my applications, drivers, keys etc again

Hi,
You will need a Windows recovery disk to do this. You have to first take a back up for this.
