I sometimes record a show and watch it right after it finishes airing while also recording another show at the same time. Example i record a show starting at 8PM when it finishes recording at 9PM i watch it right away while at the same time another show that airs at 9PM is getting recorded.

The issue i run into the video and audio get all messed up, i believe my hard drive can't keep up playing and recording at the same time. So I'm wondering if there is a way to set up a cache drive to record the show and then one it's done move the file to my main drive?

I don't think it's network related, everything is wired and only happens with back to back recordings. Don't have this problem with single recording. I've tried different players and the video messes up at the exact same spot so it's not the player.

You wouldn't usually have to resort to doing anything like that. A standard drive would usually have no problems keeping up with a few simultaneous recordings.

What type of device are you capturing video from?

Plus, it should be possible to playback a recording while it is still recording as a test and without a problem … Record a show from 8 to 9 and start playback of the Pending recording at 8.15.

Something is wrong with your PC. Sad I use a 5400 RPM Western Digital green drive to store recordings, on an ancient Core2Duo PC. It can record 3 shows at once AND playback a recording at the same time without a problem.

What are the specs of your system?
i3-3570k, 8GB RAM, Win10 Pro, Nvidia GT710, HDHomeRun (OTA), NPVR 6.x

Using a HDhomeRun and capturing to my windows server that has a q6600 and 8GB RAM.

It's quite possible the signal gets messed up at that time for this channel as i do see a few artifacts even with a good recording.

I did test recording 2 channels and playing a recording at the same time when i set up NextPVR, but had to move my data to a different HDD to accommodate the large files. will test again to see if that is the case.

Be very wary about using splitters to split the tv signal to multiple devices as they can degrade the signal and an signal that has not been amplified can only be fed into something like 3 devices before you run into problems.

The SiliconDust BDA drivers are bit prone to losing packets when multiple streams are active at the same time (due to UDP collisions etc). More recently SiliconDust have been moving away from their BDA drivers, and instead suggesting the use of HTTP streams (over TCP). The next release of NextPVR includes support for this.

I'm not sure if this is what you're seeing or not, but it could be.

Also with the bda drivers make sure you don't the NextPVR setting. Choose default or MediaPortal.

To reduce wear on my large hard disks, I use an SSD as a recording cache then move the recording to the hard disk raid on completion. This means my hard disks are primarily used for playback and power down when not being used. My wife's recording habits also mean multiple (3-4) HD programmes are often being recorded simultaneously therefore having a fast cache drive is a benefit to avoid load conflicts. SSD wear doesn't seem to be an issue with a modern SSD.
I went this way after experiencing a number of previous hard drive failures.
So yes, having a cache recording disk is possible if you want one and works well for me.
