Background colours on the Web app

Is there any significance to the colours that the programs have on the Web app? Are they just random shades of grey/black/purple?

They're colored according to the genre of the show. ie, all news shows a certain color, sports a certain color etc.

You can just turn off the genre color if you don't like the look of it.
