Hello all,

I bought this last week and is very satisfied. Works very well with GBPVR. Can anyone suggest a remote control I can buy since PVR 150MCE doesnt come with one?

Thanks for any input!

I ended up with a Hauppauge remote ($14.95 from their online store at http://www.hauppauge.com). The remote commands are received by a USBUIRT (http://www.usbuirt.com) and I configured a Girder (http://www.proximis.com) file to emulate the appropriate GBPVR keyboard commands for the IR received.

The GBPVR is configured for the default remote (Hauppauge) but bear in mind that GBPVR isn't actually processing the remote commands, that's being done by Girder. (If there is any interest I'll donate the Girder file to the project once I get it completely debugged and cleaned up.)

I tried a number of other solutions but none of them proved really satisfactory. I did buy a MCE 2005 remote but was never able to get it to work properly even after configuring GBPVR for the MCE Remote.

My ultimate goal is to build a PDA-based remote using a Visor Prism PDA and the OmniRemote (http://www.pacificneotek.com). Now that I've sorted out the Girder business i'll be back to that. The only thing that's holding me up is that not all the GBPVR functions have "hotkeys" or direct keyboard access. For example there does not appear to be a keyboard command to take you directly to Weather or Video Archiver, etc. I'd really like to see plugin developers provide an option for a user definable keyboard command sequence that would call the plugin directly. This way the user could configure it to execute directly from a keyboard or remote. I don't know if this is even posssible in the GBPVR scheme of things but its on my wishlist :-)

What OS are you running? I'm using Win2k on my PVR box, and I use the Hauppauge remote recevier with a modified universal remote.

I just ordered a iMon Universal IR Remote from PCalchemy for one of my other machines. It has a USB receiver. I think its an older model but the recevier can be used with any remote you might have around your house. I'll let you know how it works.

If you have XPMce you can use the MCE remote, You might be able to use the MCE remote on XPHome but I haven't gotten a clear answer on that. Somone one else might be able to comment. I think you can get it to work w/Girder if it doesnt' work by default.

If you want the most flexability you could look at a dedicated ir recevier like Tira or USB-UIRT and any remote of your choice. You will need interface software like Girder to to make it work. Another choice is a RF remote like ATI Remote Wonder or Niveus PC Remote(both based on X-10). They dont require line-of-site to the receiver so they work at much greater distances.

I'll post my experience with the Imon later this week.

Search the forum's. There is a ton of info on remotes.

Thanks a lot for your responses. I use Windows XP Pro and GB-PVR.

A_BRASS:

I see a cheap ATI All in One Remote Wonder (RF) on Ebay. Can it be programmed to work with GBPVR?

I assume so. I have not tried the ATI remote my self. If you cant configure it with ATI software, you can get Grider and the ATI plugin. Just a warning about Girder has a learning curve. Another forum member who has actually used the Remote Wonder would be more helpful.

Good luck

Ok I have have had a chance to set up the iMon remote. The remote it came with was the RSC remote. Its an older remote product but it appears to work well with GBPvr. It has a little joystick that acts like a trackpoint on a laptop, you can hit a toggle button on the remote and it then works like the arrow keys. (Up, down, left, and right). It has plenty of buttons that very configurable. Its sensivity is very high. I can point the remote at almost any angle in towards the receiver and it receives the signal. The real fun of this remote is that its software is pretty powerful, easy to program, and you can use many household remotes in addition to the one it comes with. I programed the Imon receiver to work with my Panasonic DVD remote.

The downside is that when assigned to a "windows function" it can't be reassigend for a specific application. Another noticable problem with the remote is the absence of a "RECORD" button. You can reassign any other button but a dedicated "record" button would be a plus. One odd thing about the receiver -- It doesent seem to accept RC5 remote codes. These are the codes used by the MCE and Hauppauge remote as well as many Philips remotes. So I was unable to use my Hauppauge 45 button remote with the Imon receiver. (I was hopeing to make this work).

All in all its a pretty powerful receiver/software package. I picked it up for $25 so its worth the investment. Its small and fits in my laptop bag. So now I have a portable media center complete with remote.
