On my setup, Nero X 3.0 seems to get to about 3.9 Gig (10^9) and pretty much thrashes the page file. Up to then it zooms along when first scanning a file (.mpg). When it hits about 3.9 (somewhere around there), the VM shoots to around 1.3 GB and nothing goes anywhere except my disk which goes round and round, but Nero never gets anywhere. CPU is low at this point, maybe a percent or two, but available memory is extremely low, maybe 512 KB (yes, half a meg) so everything crawls. I have to kill Nero to get things back to normal.

There's no problem with smaller files. 1 GB per would be good, or configurable. The other movie maker/burner I have installed is WinDVD Creator 2 (maybe Oct2004 version, the Plextor M402U version), but that always wants to render/encode (very slow) even with so-called SmartRender checked.

I'm using a Sapphire Theatrix, which does its job much better than the Plextor. Now, if I can only get some decent quick-cut/edit software. Nero will do if only I can limit the size of files created.

I suppose I could record 0800 to 0900 and then 0900 to 1000.

Has any one else seen this problem, or know of a way around it?

Sorry, I made the decision long ago to stick with one file per-recording. It would be too much of a hassle to change this now, so unfortunately you're stuck with one big recording per recording.

You might be able find a utility to split the recording for you.

I use Nero's burning software without any trouble (I think version 6 OEM). It easily deals with large files. I'm not sure what "Nero X" is, so I don't know if it's just an old version of Nero or an MPEG cut/edit utility they made.

For my MPEG cutting I use the software that comes with Hauppauge, Nanocosmos MPEG Edit I think it's called. I don't really care for it's interface, it's definitely tedious to mark your cuts all manually, but it's free, fast, doesn't reencode and it will load a cutlist from a file. I ended up writing a perl program to convert comskip output to a cutlist file that Nanocosmos will load, which works for me.

If you don't have a Hauppauge card, you can download a demo version of Nanocosmos from their website. It's limited to marking 30 second cuts so it's quite crippled, but you might find *wink, wink* that it loads a cutlist just fine from a file and processes it fully without complaint. I use the trial version instead of the Hauppauge version because the Hauppauge version insists you have Hauppauge hardware installed on the machine, and I do all my cutting on my fastest machine, not my GBPVR box.

Yeah, I know some use nero fine. There is a thread

http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?...e=1&pp=100

that describes a problem similar to mine. Anyway, this is a nero problem and the request for 1 GB files (configurable) was not just to "fix" Ahead's problem, but I find it easier to edit in smaller files.

Here's a snapshot (if the pic comes out) of what I see. Notice the flat line at the bottom? That's 0 to 80% of the 4.9 billion byte file being scanned (what nero does as you add a file). The long curve up is 80-90%. The long, flat line at the top is 90%, 90%... (got nowhere), and then I finally killed it.

Anyway, Nero will get fixed one of these days. I can't say I'll still be using it when that day arrives. The software some love to hate. But it's "free". And mostly works. Most of the time. But man, it sure can be a little piggie (and I don't mean just this).

Postscript: I uninstalled nero, clean-tool'ed, then put the CD version (oem 6.3.1.23, visionX 2.1.2.18) back on and it went through the 4.9 billion bytes fine. Memory use was constant, and CPU was pegged (good, that's its job). Previously, I had the current updates on (oem 6.6.something, VX 3.0.0.something).
