Yep. It's a hobby, and I do it in my spare time.

Given the length of time since the last release I think it is legitimate to ask, occasionally, what's going on behind the scenes.
There have been several mentions in posts on this forum about 'the next build', 'a non-public beta', 'next release', 'v7' etc so I am NOT going to ask 'when' but rather ask if a synopsis of what the next release is likely to give us could be made available. Given the obvious availability to some people for early testing this should be possible, I don't care if its not the final list of changes. For example, will it be a 'revolution' (aka v4 to v5) or an 'evolution' (aka v5 to v6) ? New user interface ? New hardware requirements ? Simply iterative improvements on what we already have (fine by me) ? I have been using NextPVR since the later v4.x releases and have gone through the updates to v5 and v6. NextPVR is a great product and I appreciate that it is maintained solely by SUB who does a great job in his spare time. I do think however that it would help maintain interest in NextPVR to at least know that the project isn't on hold and that things are happening behind the scenes to push the project forward. As I said above I am happy that the next release of NextPVR is released 'when its ready' but a bit more information about what might be coming our way would help keep me interested, Regards Chris

@ceejayemm I don't now how in one post you can ask if it is on hold when you say that you have read several posts about the next version, some from sub as recently as today. I know my own nature and if I was being pestered by messages from @techpro2004 I would slow down, does he really think his messages help?
The next version is sort of like v4 to v5 since a lot of specific platform specific digital tuner code was ported to common C# It is also like v5 to v6 since it is .netcore 6 to netcore 8. Plus sub's decision to add and focus on thumbnail skipping in late v6 has slowed things down too since it adds more client UI types that need to be considered. These factors in parallel development made it impossible to have minor releases during the year so you also will see the improvements that might have been in 2 or 3 minor releases. Martin

I think you have mis-construed '...it would help maintain interest in NextPVR to at least know that the project isn't on hold and that things are happening behind the scenes to push the project forward' - I know there is activity behind the scenes and I for one am happy for this work to be 'ready when its ready'. I simply asked for an update 'from those who know' regarding an obviously up-coming release which has been mentioned in several forum posts recently. I specifically didn't ask 'when' and although the OP has asked this several times I didn't see it as 'pestering', read his posts (or not) and forget about them if it bothers you so much. I have seen much worse on other forums. Your second paragraph is useful and contains the information I asked for - but it might have been useful for this kind of information to be posted somewhere before now as background to what work was actually in progress. I know this kind of work, especially if done in the authors spare time, does take longer than might otherwise be expected. This is not a problems for me but even some basic 'news' along the way might have prevented the 'pestering' which seems to bother you and others. This isn't, or shouldn't be, a secretive project. With some wider knowledge of what might be happening, others might like to suggest whether the direction is right or not or to suggest alternative solutions. I acknowledge that, ultimately, it is Sub's prerogative as to where to take his project but I am sure he would like to know if he is generally on the right track. As I said earlier I am happy to wait until the next version is 'ready' but that doesn't mean I wouldn't like to know in advance what we might be getting. I am curious after all as to where this super project is heading and what I might be able to do with it in future. It remains one, of very few, software project that I use every day and rely on it 'to just work' - thanks Sub! Chris

Quote:Given the length of time since the last release I think it is legitimate to ask, occasionally, what's going on behind the scenes. There no big conspiracy about what is happening behind the scenes. There has been a few times over the last year where there was almost a next version released. There was a public beta of next build back in Feb/March, which quite a few people started using. Since then, there was also almost a release about May/June, but with .NET 6 support coming to an ended, I decided to make it a slightly bigger release moving to .NET 8. The next release has been largely done for the last month, I'm just got to find the last bit of time required to get it across the line. So there is still work going on behind the scenes, including some good improvements in lots of areas. Sometimes it's had to take a back seat while I've been busy at work, or busy with family, other distractions. I won't publish the change list, because people will just start asking why other specific stuff hasn't been done, to try getting there pet change included. It wont be long now. |
