Running the TV aerial downstairs will mean OTA TV direct on the TV as it has a Freeview tuner built in - it also has apps for Netflix, Prime Video and UK on-demand like iPlayer and ITVX.

I'm much closer to deciding what I need. I might stick to Debian for the npvr server upstairs, run network cable and TV aerial downstairs and get a generic Android box for a npvr client connected to TV. I had thought about buying 2 or 3 of them to compare from Amazon based on the idea their return policy is good.
