In Australia, DVB streams include teletext subtitles. I really dislike how these subtitles are rendered in NextPVR, so I thought I'd use ffmpeg to extract the subtitles into a SubRip (.srt) file and have control over the font used for rendering.
Using post processing, the SubRip is generated in the <filename>.English.srt format. Usefully, NextPVR detects the file automatically -- the OSD shows [SRT subtitles, English] after the teletext option. Unfortunately, when the SRT option is selected, no subtitles are displayed at all.
VLC has no problem with the same files. SRT subtitles are displayed immediately upon selection.
Kodi also displays the subtitles without issue using the Video source. It seems unable to play them from TV/Recording menu without loading the SubRip specifically, but that could be due to NextPVR or the related add-on package. However, using the yauiclient add-on, SRT subtitles are displayed without a problem. Not sure what's going on there.
I've attached the logs for NextPVR showing teletext subtitles and then my attempt to load SRT subtitles. Kodi is not involved here at all.
