Improving EPG Time Zone Handling and Automatic Guide Fallback

I’ve been using NextPVR for quite a while now and really appreciate its flexibility as a personal video recorder (PVR). I rely on NextPVR daily for live TV, scheduling recordings, and managing archived content. One area I would love to see improved is how the electronic program guide (EPG) handles time zones and fallback mechanisms when the primary data source fails.
Currently, if the EPG uses a source that does not match the local time zone, program listings often appear at the wrong times, which can be confusing, especially near borders or during daylight saving changes. I’ve noticed this issue occurs when users connect NextPVR to front-end applications like Jellyfin or Kodi, and the EPG does not align with local time. It would be very useful if the system could automatically detect the time zone and adjust program listings accordingly without manual intervention.
The second area that could use improvement is the fallback mechanism for guide data when the primary source is unavailable. Many users rely on direct or OTA guide data, but when that source is temporarily down, NextPVR currently has no automatic fallback. If the software could attempt another guide source or use cached data, it would significantly improve reliability for scheduled recordings and live schedule accuracy.
I’ve also looked into some trusted sites for TV and PVR information to better understand EPG management and guide data:
  • TV Guide – provides accurate program schedules for multiple countries
  • TitanTV – online scheduling and program guide tool
  • EPG123 – a solution for fetching EPG data for Windows PVR
  • NextPVR – the main source for documentation and software updates
  • Additionally, I’ve tried useful tools like fullscreen black screen tool, which is very handy for displaying a blank screen when pausing content or testing TV settings
In summary, the improvements I would love to see include:
  • Automatic handling of EPG time zones so program listings always match the user’s local time
  • A prioritized list of guide sources with fallback options when the preferred source is unavailable
  • Better tools for managing EPG sources without manually importing XMLTV each time
I believe these improvements would benefit both new and long-time users, especially for ensuring accurate live TV listings and scheduled recordings. What does everyone else think? Are there other ideas to enhance the EPG experience in NextPVR?
Looking forward to the discussion
