3rd Party Remote

I've got a GBPVR setup with Hauppauge 500MCE card, and it works and looks great OTA ... very happy with computer output. However, I want the output on my TV (downstairs).

I've been trying to get my old MediaMVP to work properly, and have had no luck so far ( as detailed in the MVP forum ). As a matter of desperation, I'm looking at a backup plan: moving the PC down by the TV, dedicating it to GBPVR, and getting a remote.

To my dismay, Hauppauge doesn't sell a remote for the 500MCE, and recommend Media Center remotes from Microsoft. Since I'm running XP SP2, I am uncertain as to whether GBPVR supports these remotes or not.

I have found the ATI Wonder Remote, with some Googling to determine that it's not directly supported but can be made to work with GBPVR. However, I'm hoping for a less compicated solution if I have to go to a dedicated GBPVR box.

It's my 'druthers' that I could get my MediaMVP to work, but I'm reaching the point of skepticism that I'll get it to properly coexist with my network. So, the following questions:

* Is there a recommended remote for GBPVR I can purchase without purchasing another capture card? If so, what is it?

* Will the recommended remote work with Windows XP SP2?

* What's the practical minimum memory for a dedicated GBPVR box? 256MB? 512 MB? I'm currently using 1GB, but would rather reuse the memory in a replacement box if I can ( assuming I have to dedicate a box to GBPVR to do what I want ).

The only remotes that I can confirm works with GB-PVR, are the Hauppauge remotes that come with the PVR150/250/350, and the MCE2004 remote. Note the 2004 part. It'll probably also work with the new MCE2005 remotes, but I'm not sure.

I personally use the MCE2004 remote on my "production" box which is running XP SP2, and has a PVR500.

You probably want to have at least 512MB in the box.

If you set up GIRDER, and use the MCE2005 Girder plugin, you can get full functionality of the MCE2005 remote, including the IR blasters. It really is a very nice remote and very inexpensive (around US$38.00)

If you have Windows XP and have SP1, that has the drivers already for the MCE2004 remote, if you have SP2, then the drivers for MCE2005 remote are already installed.

Just plug the USB receiver and wait a few seconds for the drivers to install.

There is a Girder GML file at the plugins site for GB-PVR, so all you would have to do is have GIRDER learn the remote codes from your STB's remote and go.

Thanks for the replies. Before Art posted, I had already ordered the generic MCE remote from NewEgg:

I am happy to say that the basic buttons ( arrow keys, selector, play, pause, skip, back ) do work properly "out of the box", and the remote uses a driver already provided with Windows XP SP2 ( thus, no driver disk ).

I'll have to dig around and see if I can find instructions on how to configure the remaining buttons. I miss F7 ( for widescreen ), FF, Info, and some other buttons that I can do on my keyboard but the remote ignores.

Thanks again for the great product. Once I can get this worked out, it should pass the WAT ( wife approval test ) and I can make a donation. Great software!

An update:

I'm still having troubles with the generic MCE remote. The remote appears to be transmitting properly ( e.g. the red light on the receiver blinks when I push a key ), but only the following keys seem to be working:

Volume up/down
Arrow directional keys ( and enter )
Channel Up/Down
Play
Pause
Skip Forward
Skip Back
The number keys ( 0-9 )
Back

After fiddling with GIRDER a little bit ( the trial version ), it appears that Girder doesn't see the other keys, either. So I've come to the conclusion that maybe it doesn't use the same scan codes as the Microsoft remote.

Rather than mess with it indefinitely, I'm going to attempt to return the remote to NewEgg and spend the extra $8 for the MS remote. Sometimes penny pinching just isn't worth the trouble.

I just purchased the microsoft remote as well as Gridder and have just started the process of trying to get it to work. Have you created a group yet that works with GBPVR that we can use?
