Hi all again Smile

after doing some reading of XBMC.. and checking out previous posts in this forum.. i am a little undecided as to whether or not to get a MVP or a XBox..

i guess the xbox (even with mod chip) is now at a price point where it is less than AU$100 more expensive than an MVP..

so.. just wondering, is there anyone here who have used both ?...
if so, please share your experiences and thoughts Smile

thanks!

I have and here are my issues:
The XBOX XBMC can only play previously recorded shows and may be able to play an existing live stream if you map it correctly. It basically can navigate and play files from GBPVR like a file explorer.
The MVP can do this but also display and setup recording, navigate the program guide, delete and manage recordings, use the additional plug-in that have been created by talented people here in the forum.

- MVP gives you the full GBPVR experience.
- XBOX with XBMC has it own interface for media and can only play existing media from GBPVR.

If you have an XBOX setup for gaming this will allow you to extend your media you have in GBPVR to that television, but if you want the full PVR features you will want an MVP or a second PC.
Now, if someone could make an MVP client for the XBOX so it looks like an MVP device there would be no question to use it, more features and functions in one box to save space and one less device for the WAF (wife acceptance factor).

I had been think about doing this in past, but given I just sold XBOX to make way for a XBox360 later in the year, I can say with some certainty that I wont be doing that now. I hadn't used it in a while, and decided to sell it now whilst it was still semi valuable.

so you're going with the xbox360 and not ps3 (or both?), the ps3 actually looks like its more powerful this time around, they both look extremely ugly thou. why cant they make a game console to fit in with the rest of your hifi equipment? its the logical thing to do, but no lets make it stick out and look ugly, because hey thats cool.

im done with the whole console thing, trying my luck with a htpc gaming setup (of course finding games that work well in this situation is hard, boy i can bitch and bitch about computer games all day....).

I may end up with both, but 360 is a lot closer. I was also pretty happy with the current xbox. I must admit though, I'm you're typically early adopter that has to have every toy, not a hard core gamer.

Another problem with using the XBox as an MVP is that, far from being silent, it is actually quite noisy.
GB-PVR 1.0.16 (recording service and database) running on: VIA EPIA 5000 (533Mhz), 512MB, 40GB HD, PVR-150MCE, USB-UIRT controlling Sky Digital box.

GB-PVR 1.3.11 (front-end and client for above) running on: Toshiba NB100 netbook 1.6Ghz, 160GB HD, 1GB RAM.

Front-end viewed on 2xMVPs (using mvpmc dongle).

I have both and use the MVP for the family and the XBox for myself.

This is probably the biggest factor for me in using an MVP over an Xbox running XBMC for the family T.V. An Xbox is incredibly noisey, and will always be a source of noise no matter how you much you silence it. An MVP has no moving parts.

However, an XBOX, does have some advantages.

1) an Xbox will play virtually any content created with any codec. AVI, MPEG, MOV, etc.

2) an Xbox is upgradeable for any future content.

3) an Xbox can be standalone, as you can put your content on the internal hard drive. great for vacations, when you want to take content somewhere to show, and almost guaranteed, the Xbox can plug into the T.V at the far end.

4) an Xbox also allows you to run games.

5) an Xbox also allows you to play audio CDs, watch DVDs, etc.

6) You can always burn content to a DVD or CD and watch it on your Xbox.

7) With appropriate cables and connectors can expand your Xbox to provide a High Def signal, Dolby Digital, etc. The MVP can not be modified. (actually it can, but not easily Smile )

There are lots of drawbacks as were listed before, such as no interface into your computer running GBPVR, although I suppose you could use a web interface. No content creation, etc.

Bottom line I think is that they serve slightly different purposes. Is up to each person to deciede what is important to them. I couldn't deciede and have both Big Grin Sorry though to hear though that GBPVR won't be ported to the Xbox Sad

#1) Athalon XP 3200, WXP SP2, 2Gig RAM, Hauppauge MCE-150
#2) Celeron, @ 2.2 Ghz, Windows 2003 server SP1, 1Gig RAM, 2 x Hauppauge MCE-150s (running 24x7)
#3) PopCorn Hour.. I'm working on that one.

XBMC & 2 Hauppauge Media MVPs connecting to the server.. and a couple Terrabytes of kids shows.
