Jk Smurf- Great job. This is exactly what I have done. I do not have any MVP software loaded but I do not use AVI's. It is also what I do for changing out the dongle. I am not at my main machine now so I don't know which dongle version I am using. It was from around January of this year if I remember correctly. It would be great to post the actual dongle file on the WIKI so everyone can find it. Thanks for writing this up. It should help a lot of people lost in "contacting server" land.

I am afraid my eyelids fluttered for a brief second, then the lights went out on this one. Could you elaborate in simple terms, or is it not really important for this WIKI topic?

I understand you "can" either use Virtual dub (from LilYOda http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php?t=4712&page=10 )
or AutoGK (from A Brass http://forums.gbpvr.com/showpost.php?p=5...tcount=150 ) or FFDshow Transcoding (Same Thread, e.g. FFDShow config here http://www.designfoto.nl/GBPVR/settings.html). But I don't understand why you need the Hauppage s/w installed for this? (In fact I don't understand much of this at all, so type slowly....! )

bluesxman Wrote:Only if you unplugged the MVP before installing Hauppauge software. Picky I know!
Ah, grasshopper, strictly you are are correct, but this one I can live with as it is. Folks who installed the Hauppauge s/w should have RTFM before they did so, and Happyaggie's procedure is to .... <Drumroll> Pull the power plug <Drumroll> http://www.hauppauge.com/pages/support/s...iamvp.html

If you think I should add "Only for transcoding AVIs, though this looks like it is customisable with the latest release" I can, but if I can't understand why, I feel a bit silly :-)

Cheers. I used to write a lot of FAQs for a motorbike site for a few years (but it got to be too much work with a young fambly), so I am used to skimming and trimming quickly and hopefully ripping out the guts and re-ordering it.

Just putting it together in a simple form helps ME understand it... (and that in itself takes a lot of doing Smile ) so if it is in any way incorrect, it's my fault for not understanding it. Please do correct anything idiotic.

Cheers, I hope so, and hope it takes some pressure off sub. The man has serious patience, answering Q after Q at a personal level, (except with rude complete wayne kerr's and they deserve both barrels).

It's probably not relevant for this WIKI topic as it is mainly concerned with getting the MVP to work with GBPVR - getting AVI/DIVX playback would be a WIKI topic all in itself! The link re Virtualdub shows how to convert an existing AVI to a different size & fps to make it more compatible with GBPVR's transcoding process and therefore less likely to lose connection. That's possbily the same with the other links as well. In order for the AVI to be played on the MVP it needs to be converted to an MPEG which is done on the fly. GBPVR uses the transcoding components that come with the Hauppauge software to achieve this. However it does look like you can now specify whatever software you like with the latest release.

I did say I was being picky Big Grin . I think you've done a great job with the information on the WIKI - perhaps a link to the entry should be made a sticky on the MVP forum?

I don't have the rights for that (and rightly so)... BUT a Big Fat Link from this forum to the WIKI would be cool...

I thought folks might want to see what changed on the dongle.bin front (or not, as the case may be). Short answer, sub is right on, last few versions no change on the bin front.

Point to note that the RELEASE 24_23096 is different from the Stable Beta 25_23209, both from Hauppage Official Site. Others are from shspvr.com.

k.

Update: Wow things change fast... :-)

* The dongle.bin version has not changed between the April 2005 24_23104 and current (as of 15 Sep 05) 25_23242 versions.
* As of GBPVR v94.8, GBPVR uses the "current" dongle.bin. However sub notes here http://forums.gbpvr.com/showpost.php?p=5...tcount=111 that he has gone back to the older 24_23906 version of dongle.bin for the next release (94.9 → ??), as it appears to be more stable.
* Hauppauge official RELEASE version 24_23096 is different from the current BETA.
* Hauppauge Site's own BETA version 25_23209 is the same as GBPVR v94.8 (and older) dongle.bin.

k. In the table below, dongle.bin from GBPVR's dongle folder is from v94.8.

Done :-) Well not the "actual" dongle file, as I don't know how that works with copyright etc, so I won't put it in there .... but I've added a list of what is relevant and where to get them and how to extract them to section "C". http://gbpvr.com/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/FAQ/MVP#toc2

However as noted above, sub has said he is reverting to the 24_23906 version of dongle.bin for the next release (94.9 → ??), so you will actually get it in GBPVR anyway. If you save your old one, you will have both.

jksmurf,

Nice one with the faq! No doubt I'll be referring to it tonight when I (hopefully) get my MVP delivered.

Whilst skim reading it I came upon a small point:

A.1

... "you will have a DHCP Server installed already. “As part of the process of enabling ICS (you will need a second NIC), " ....

You don't necessarily need a second NIC e.g. if you use a USB ADSL modem. In my setup I have my PC set up for ICS with a USB modem and the ethernet port is connected to a network switch to which is connected my upstairs PC, XBox and, soon, my MVP.

Cheers
GB-PVR 1.0.16 (recording service and database) running on: VIA EPIA 5000 (533Mhz), 512MB, 40GB HD, PVR-150MCE, USB-UIRT controlling Sky Digital box.

GB-PVR 1.3.11 (front-end and client for above) running on: Toshiba NB100 netbook 1.6Ghz, 160GB HD, 1GB RAM.

Front-end viewed on 2xMVPs (using mvpmc dongle).

Cheers, updated the FAQ with info.

Also added a note that while the Hauppage mediaMPV s/w does NOT need to be installed (as written previously), installing the Hauppauge S/W does however install a MPEG2 Codec for you, which you may wish to test for MPEG2 playback in your system, although you can always extract just the required codecs and register them Manually if need be. If it doesn’t give you the best playback, or you have chosen another codec which performs better, you can uninstall it. They “should” remain in these dirs after you un-install the Hauppauge MPV Software, but they get unregistered and you need to re-register them (if you really want the option to use them).

InterVideo NonCSS Video Decoder for Hauppauge
C:\Program Files\Common Files\IviSDK\Hauppauge\IviVideo_Hauppauge.ax
InterVideo NonCSS Audio Decoder for Hauppauge
C:\Program Files\Common Files\IviSDK\Hauppauge\IviAudio_Hauppauge.ax

Let me know if any of the other parts can be better worded, or corrected, as the case may be.

Cheers

k.
