This should be easy but for some reason it's not working for me.

I've configured the router to open up ports 5800 and 5900, pointing them to my HTPC's statis IP address inside the LAN. I configured this the same way I've already configured gbpvr's web admin to be visible from outside my lan, as well as my ftp server, but I can't connect from work.

Is there another port that needs to be opened that I'm unaware of, like for control? Alternatively, I suppose my work lan could be blocking those ports from leaving our network, but if they are, is there anyway I can figure that out? Tracert doesn't let you check a port, and I have no problem connecting to my ftp server or gbpvr's web interface.

Thanks for your help,
Tim

I haven't used my D-link router in a while, but everthing you said sounds correct. What type of port did you specify? TCP or UDP? Is it persistant port forward or a application triggered.

My setup has persistant port forward, and TCP. But I'm not using my D-Link at this time. Your best bet might to have someone else try to get to your VNC logon screen.

only 1 port is necessary. default was TCP/5900, but the newer versions of VNC might change that

Now where are you trying to log in from? If it's from another ISP, it's very likely your ISP would block that port inbound (meaning noone can access a server you'd host on that port)

I set my forwarding up to be persistant, with both TCP and UDP even thought I was pretty sure only TCP was necessary. I setup the same rules in the router firewall, and I don't have a software firewall on the PC.

While I supposed it's possible my ISP is blocking the incoming port, I'd be kind of surprised since they don't block ftp or web ports... I can hit these servers on my box fine, just not VNC.

Assuming something along the line is blocking my port somewhere, does anyone know how to determine that? I can tracert to the PC fine, but of course tracert doesn't let you specify a port number.

Make sure that it is not being blocked by the Windows firewall - XP sp2 blocks it by default

if you use the 'standard' vnc client (not the java client), port 5900 is enough. 5800 is used for a webserver delivering you the java applet.
but the vnc communication is completely done on port 5900 (+display number! (default 0))

The newer versions of VNC can easily be tweaked to run on another port. Run it on port 80, reconfigure your router, and try again. If it works, something, somewhere, is blockign port 5900
