I don't use a set top box for my cable but I belive I understand the basics.
The PVR150 comes with an IR blaster ( the smaller of the two plastic devices on the cable ) which is to be placed over the remote reciever of the cable box. Then the irblaster can be configured with codes from Hauppauge to change channels on your cable box. This will allow the GBpvr software to change channels on the cable box to record premium channels that are not available by running the coax directly into the pc.
You will have to change your cables so that the pc is getting its signal from the set top box and not directly from the splitter. Also, I don't think that the remote from the cable company will ever be able to control anything in GBpvr. Try serching here and over at byopvr http://forum.byopvr.com/dvr/index.php
to get an idea of how to set this up.
Recording from VHS works great doesn't it. I am currently converting all my analog home videos to dvds using the 150.
