I assume that must depend on your viewing device. Experiment and see what looks best on your tv/monitor.

In my experience with one PVR150 and one PVR500, I always use contrast to adjust what I typically use brightness for on any other device (if that makes sense). In other words, if brightness doesn't do what you want it to do, try contrast.
